How To Start An Evaluation Essay: Free Tips And Examples
An evaluation essay is a piece of writing to review the overall quality of a place, program, business, product, or service. This can be positive or negative. However, the credibility of your paper will have a lot to do with the way that it is written. This starts at the beginning of your essay, making it especially important that you follow these tips when writing the introduction for your review.
Provide General Information
A good place to start for any evaluation is to provide general information about what you will review. The information that you should provide will change based on what you are reviewing. If you are reviewing a movie, for example, provide information about the year of release, director, actors, and plot. If you are reviewing a retail chain, consider providing information about the founder, their growth, and when they entered business. Here is an example.
Sylvan is a company providing tutoring, college prep, and other school services for children. They were established in 1979 and now have more than 800 locations around the United States alone. Their goal is to work with children on an individual level to give them the best possible opportunity for success.
Establish Your Criteria
The introduction of your essay should also establish your criteria for evaluation. The criteria should be objective, meaning that your opinion will not affect the review. Here is an example.
My criteria for reviewing Burger King will be menu variety, service provided, and the quality of the products they use in their cooking.
Keep a Neutral Tone
It is critical that you keep a neutral tone as you write the introduction of your evaluation essay. There is a time and place for providing your opinion, but it is not the beginning of your paper. You can keep a neutral tone by avoid positive and negative words. Here is an example of an introduction for a movie.
Recently, I had the chance to watch “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005).” It follows the story of Charlie Bucket and Grandpa Joe, who join a group of contest winners to tour the factory of candy maker Willy Wonka. In this review, I will evaluate based on the criteria of plot themes, how the music related to the movie, and believability of the actors in their roles.
